Charleston
This town surely has a rich history, but it is not as rich as some of the amazing dishes served at the amazing restaurants!
The places we tried:
- The Ordinary: Best in Charleston; sit at bar and try the oyster slider, white shrimp toast, zucchini carpaccio, mustard-crusted grouper with grits and chanterelles, and the seafood gumbo (if Thursday) ($$$)
- Lewis BBQ: Unreal Texas barbecue in South Carolina; the brisket, hot gut sausage, and all the sides say Don’t Mess with Lewis ($$)
- Husk: It makes every Charleston list for a good reason; the Union Square Cafe of the South; duck confit was the best I’ve had ($$$$)
- The Bar at Husk: Better atmosphere than the restaurant; dark little tavern next door with great whiskey selection; get a bucket of fried chicken to was down your drink ($$$)
- Leon’s Fine Poultry and Oysters: The name says it all; try the grilled oysters, fried chicken, peel ‘n eat shrimp and either the frozen gin & tonic or the Frose ($$$)
- LoLo’s: If you make it out to Folly Island, this shack on the side of the road has fresh, amazing seafood, the best hush puppies with honey butter, and refreshing sweet tea ($$)
- Sugar Bakery: a little hole-in-the-wall bakery with cupcakes that would make Magnola jealous ($)
- Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit: a morning ritual; try the sausage, egg, and pimento cheese on a buttermilk biscuit ($$)
- The Belmont: A great cocktail bar on King Street ($$)
- Citrus Club: Great bar on the rooftop of the Dewberry; make a reservation as they don’t let it get too crowded ($$$)
- Jeni’s: I know it’s a chain, but the ice cream is sublime on a hot Charleston day ($)
The places we didn’t have time to try:
- Edmund’s Oast
- 167 Raw
- The Darling Oyster Bar
- The Obstinate Daughter
- FIG
- S.N.O.B.
- Magnolia’s
- Home Town BBQ
- Rodney Scott’s BBQ
